Hey friends, Jeff @SymphonicMetal posted a great music thread, and I wanted to follow it up with a movie thread! Unfortunately, Youtube won't allow me to post most of the Free with Ads movies without an error message, but many of these are on there!

My first I am going to post is one I had not seen in probably 25+ years, but it came out the year I was born. Michael Mann directed 1981's Thief masterfully, and it marked a real high point in James Caan's career. He played Frank's character with such grit and believability. If you have not seen this gem, check it out! Jim Belushi and Dennis Farina made their movie debuts, and it is filmed in Chicago. I remember a lot of the signs and locations in the movie as a young boy growing up there.

The original poster always confused me, but now I understand that he is wearing welding goggles to crack into a safe and the sparks are reflected in the goggles. I always thought they were sunglasses!

This is a great interview with James about the making of the movie! Michael Mann hired actual thieves to serve as technical consultants, several of whom were still wanted by the FBI!

When James passed away in 2022, I was amazed that he was 82 years old. In my mind's eye, he was always young and agile like the Thief!

I'm not huge on movies but the ones I like,............I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY ......LIKE!

2 come to mind immediately. 1977's "Cross of Iron'"is one. A fairly obscure anti-war movie from the German point of view on the Russian Front during the retreat. James Coburn is the main star as the disillusioned anti-Nazi Sgt. Steiner. Many of his German commrades have English accents which doesn't take away from this brilliant movie. I'v never been in a war but I imagine that the frenzied, confusing battle scenes did a good job of conveying the fog of war to their audience.

And if there is a male that watches what a Russian nurse does to a German soldier without wincing..............then there is something wrong with you. OMG!

The second movie is the original Mad Max with the American overdubs. The original Aussie one I don't like because both the cops and the motorcycle gang have high pitched girlish voices. But that movie has the best opening scene and an iconic ending scene and a whole lot of great stuff in between.

I loved the first two Mad Maxs but did not like the third. And my brother was correct when he said I'll never get though 10 minutes of the 4th one and he was right!

"Just remember to think of the Night Rider when you look at the night sky."

I'm not big on movies either, it's mainly comedies for me. Top on the list would be Grumpy Old Men. Lemmon and Mattheau were comedic genius.

@SymphonicMetal I have seen Mad Max, but never saw or even heard of Cross of Iron....late era Sam Peckinpah, always gritty stuff!

@bfd13 That is a classic! They were always funny, but that was my favorite of their collaborations in the movies!!

Another favorite of mine is an absolute masterpiece from Steven Spielberg. It is hard to watch, but a truly excellent movie about the Holocaust and the events of WWII:

Another great Spielberg movie is Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks. It is based on the true story of a prisoner / spy swap negotiated by an American attorney at the beginning of the Cold War, right in the shadows of the Berlin Wall. Really well done!

I think I must be living under a rock sometimes. Outside of the two movies I mentioned I have not seen any of the movies that the rest of you posted about! I've heard of just about all of them and I know most are very well known and extremely popular but I haven't seen them.

I wonder about my self at times.

Well, back under my rock! Geez! LMAO!!
