WTTF: 72-73 Topps Basketball

Yeah, that's definitely true. I'm not a vintage collector (yet, although you guys are pushing me) but in that case I'd just have to look at ones that look like they're closest to the quality of the card in question. Definitely not a perfect art, but for me it'd be a heck of a lot better than giving up $120 BV for a card I can buy for under $30 on eBay.

I saw your thread and, unfortunately, I don't have a hockey OPG. I only have basketball and baseball. I'll probably switch to the total access once my subscriptions are due again, but that doesn't happen for another three weeks.
I get not wantling to trade for a $120 card when you can buy it for $30. But if everyone uses the same pricing source (in this case Beckett's OPG) then I'd have to trade it or trade for it at $120 with the value adjusted for condition.

Rotorob came through on the hockey pricing as you can see. Hopefully, we'll get the Artis Gilmore RC value from him as well. That could tell if Beckett's adjusted values for the 72-73s and not the 71-72s. Very strange if that occured as those two sets are like sister sets they are so similar.

Speaking of Hockey values it looks like those have skyrocketed in the last 4 years. Some of the older cards have tripled in value since my guide was published while all the other sports have pretty much remained stable. The 74-75 Topps Lanny McDonald went from $12 to $30, the 1981-82 Topps Dino Ciccereli RC went from $10 to $30, the Jari Kurri RC went from $8 to $25 and the 81-82 Topps Gretzky is now $50 and I think that wa $15 or $20. WOW.

I'm probably going to trade for the $30 Lanny McDoald RC at $30 even though I can buy it on EBAY for much less. That is where trade value comes in over sell price. You have to have a baseline on older raw cards to make trades. As long as everyine uses the same pricing source the trade will be fair.

I don’t have a trade site posted, sorry. If I happen to put something up that catches your eye just let me know.

All fair points and I definitely don’t mind trading at agreed upon BVs for a baseline. I think what Mike is getting at is that the OPG and what we’re seeing in older printed guides definitely don’t match up and in some cases it’s probably smarter to drop $30 for a card than trading some rarer high numbers that may have a lower BV but also sell at their BV for a more widely available RC or star card.

THat Gilmore RC is not mine but if it were, whatever the OPG said it was would be the starting point for trade value minus anything for condition issues. THere is no way one trader will discount because of a sale price and the other goes by book. That is the quickest way to grind a trade to a halt. If one trader likes the sale price vs the trade value nothing is stopping them from going an d buying it.

If that Gilmore RC is now $120 or $60 that is where that card should be valued at in a trade.

@SymphonicMetal where would we stand on a smaller trade with what I have available for you now? I’m happy to look into some modern you may want, but we may have run out of vintage stuff I can help you with at this point.
